Continued delivery of quality learning to you
While there are changes underway for us, we are continuing to provide flexible, career-focused learning that fits around your life — on-the-job, on campus and online.
While some New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology - NZIST (formerly Te Pūkenga) business divisions are moving forward independently from 1 January 2026, we will continue providing quality learning through Northtec, Tai Poutini, the Western Institute of Technology, and Whitireia & WelTec into 2026.
Work towards the final disestablishment of NZIST by early 2027 supports the Government's decision to no longer provide a centralised approach to vocational education, instead restoring decision-making to regional institutions and industry-owned on-job training providers.
We are committed to minimising the impact on delivery of our education and training programmes to ensure your learning continues seamlessly while meeting the Government's expectations for a new sector model.
Frequently asked questions
It is business as usual - you'll be able to complete your programme of study through your current provider. Support services and processes will also stay the same for you. This is regardless of whether your provider is remaining within NZIST or transitioning out on 1 January 2026.
If you're graduating in 2025, your qualification would likely have co-branding with Te Pūkenga and/or New Zealand Institute of Technology and the name of the institution with which you began your learning journey.
For those graduating during 2026, the institution you are studying with will award your qualification with their name.
All qualifications will be valid and recognised by employers.
